This series is just getting better and better. Where else can you get a love triangle that isn't annoying, a main character who is a wonderful balance of tough and vulnerable, and some really unique vampire/shifter world building? I've got this author on my must read list.
Dark Child Covens Rising picks up where we last left Kat. She's in Paris, hiding out, pretending to be dead. There's a growing concern about her impending transition, but she does a good job of hiding most of the signs from her caretakers. Jonathan, who we used to hate, ends up coming in very handy for Kat and her deception. Kat's many suitors end up resurfacing in this one pretty early on, giving us some wonderful sexual tension, resolving any misunderstandings pretty easily, and reigniting rivalry for her affections.
Poor Kat is torn between even more worlds than before in this one. Not only is she struggling to balance between the shifters and vampires, but she's also introduced to a new element in the families of power (aka witches). The big bad is still the Vodas, but we're not quite sure where all these new characters will end up on the spectrum of good and evil. I really enjoyed getting new faces in Ben and Yara. I can't wait to see their completely messed up YA romance goes in the future.
This series is addictive and amazing. If you haven't read Dark Child The Awakening, and you have even a remote interest in paranormal books -- what are you waiting for?? This series will knock your socks off and keep you reading late into the night.
This series of serial novels must be read in order. The omnibus of book one is Dark Child (The Awakening) Omnibus Edition. This is the omnibus of book two.
Kat seems to be acquiring acoylets wherever she goes lately. There's her waiter at the café she goes for lunch every day (though he's human at least) and now Jonathan is lurking outside her window every night... Which is a good thing for her when regular human blood no longer seeks to cut it... The changes to Kat's life seem to be happening more and more quickly. What do they mean? Is she turning? Why is her blood not sensitive to sunlight like other hybrid's? What is she going to do?
The revelations in this series just keep on coming! Finding out she really isn't human and never has been had to be a shock to say the least. Finding out she was of the Families had to be mind blowing especially as she had not a clue her mom wasn't human to begin with. Now all she needs to do is figure out how to use her powers when she WANTS to instead of hoping she will be able to if she NEEDS to! The learning curve alone is astoundingly incomprehensible!
The addition of new characters and the revisiting of older minor ones really fleshes out this book and makes the world seem much more realistic and diverse. There seems to be more of a drive to this book as Kat becomes more comfortable and owns her diverse heritage instead of being afraid all of the time. It is nice to see her trusting her instincts more as she finds her footing within her new expanded reality. If you liked the last five episodes you will love these five episodes even more!!! I know I did and I have no clue how I am going to live without Kat and her companions until the next series of serials comes out some time next year!!!
